Tips I’ve Learned as a Cabo Wedding Photographer

April 24, 2021

Los Cabos is one of the best places in the world for a destination wedding, an elopement, or an engagement photoshoot. With its unique blend of sun-streaked deserts, mountainous backdrops, perfectly blue Pacific water, and good-times culture, Cabo is where you go to create unforgettable memories. Now that I’ve got several Cabo weddings under my belt, I’m happy to get to share with you some of the lessons that I’ve learned along the way and help you plan your perfect day at one of the most incredible places on earth.

While Cabo is always beautiful, no two weddings there are exactly alike. In my time as a Cabo wedding photographer, I’ve learned that a combination of hands-on experience, local knowledge, and an eye for detail is what makes for the best Cabo wedding photoshoots. Like with all outdoor photography, choosing the right time of day for your shoot is key. In Cabo, during the peak winter months, the best spots can fill up quickly – choosing a photographer who has an intimate knowledge of your location becomes more important than ever.

Visit the Cabo Arch

No Cabo destination wedding is complete without a Cabo Arch adventure session, and the best time to go is at sunset. The Cabo Arch is a naturally occurring rock arch rising out of the water at Baja California’s tip, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Sculpted by waves, wind, and shifting tectonic plates, the Cabo Arch is a lasting symbol of the city and home to a rainbow of tropical fish, coral formations, and scores of sea lions.

You may have seen the Arch featured in countless postcards and posters, but nothing can prepare you for seeing it in person. The natural monument has stood the test of time for about 30 million years, making it the perfect tribute to commitment and a one-of-a-kind backdrop for your wedding photos. At sunset on the water, golden hour lighting is the ideal way to capture the moment for photographs that you can look back at for years to come.

Chartering a boat is the best way to get out to the Arch for a wedding or engagement photography session. If you opt for a glass-bottomed boat, you can usually spot colorful fish swimming underneath you in the crystal clear water on the way out and back. If you book your wedding for mid-January through mid-March, you might be lucky enough to see migrating gray and humpback whales passing by the Arch.

Local Knowledge is Everything

Cabo is among the world’s most popular tourist destinations, winning a 2020 TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice award. Even though it’s frequently visited by people from every corner of the globe, it’s still important to choose a Cabo wedding photographer who speaks Spanish. Even locals who speak fluent English tend to appreciate it as a sign of respect. Having a wedding photographer who can seamlessly navigate any rules, guidelines, or logistics in the area’s actual language is incredibly helpful – especially in unforeseen complications.

When choosing a photographer for any destination wedding, you always want to pick someone who’s a frequent traveler and has previous knowledge of the area. I can’t stress this enough – as someone who’s shot multiple weddings in Cabo, you definitely want to pick a photographer who not only can find you the best spots but who also knows when to go to them! The right Cabo wedding photographer will be able to point out locations you won’t even see ahead of time on Pinterest

Finally, understanding the desert climate is a must. Cabo has a subtropical desert climate, meaning the days can be arid, with dry heat and dust in the desert regions. It’s warm year-round, although in the first few months of the year you may want a light jacket at night. July through September, the temperature can climb up into the 90s. A good Cabo wedding photographer can plan around the hottest periods, ensuring you get the best times of day for your shoot.

Look for an Experienced Cabo Wedding Photographer

I highly recommend choosing an experienced wedding photographer to capture your big day. Nothing is more frustrating than hearing from couples who say that after spending so much time planning, researching, saving up for, and booking their dream destination wedding, they still didn’t end up with any good pictures together. It’s almost as bad as hearing couples say that their wedding photographs were nothing special, and they don’t even look at them anymore! Ideally, you want to have so many beautiful photographs of your shared experience that you have a hard time narrowing down your favorites. Selecting an experienced Cabo wedding photographer will give you peace of mind that you have scores of unforgettable images that will last a lifetime.

Takeaway

Cabo is a simply gorgeous, one-of-a-kind location for a destination wedding, elopement, or engagement shoot. The combination of stunning cliffs, sun-soaked deserts, and deep blue Pacific water honestly has to be seen to be believed. I’m still blown away by Cabo’s natural beauty and how it consistently delivers the most stunning photographs and wonderful memories, even after multiple weddings.

Surveys show that 90% of first-time travelers to Cabo say they would definitely come back, and 7 out of 10 are repeat visitors.
